Tips On What To Wear

Several clients have asked the question, “What do you recommend I wear to a photo session?” Of course, I am no fashion expert! I’ve been known to send my children off to school in camo pants and plaid shirts once or twice. However, I do have a few tips that will help you decide on what to wear to make your photos look great!

Tip 1 - Mix it up a bit! If I’m photographing a family, I love to see a mix of at least 3 different colors. Whether you have chosen to wear a set of neutral color tones like white, gray, navy and cream, or go bold with mustard yellow, purple, cream and brown; mixing it up will add interest to your photos. Below are some great examples of color schemes by Caroline Johansson...

Tip 2 - Stay away from pinstripes that are close together. Lines that are close together will flutter on camera and look distorted.

Tip 3 - What about patterns? I LOVE patterns. However, for a photo session I would stick to no more than one (sometimes two) pattern. Multiple patterns could take away from what’s most important in the photo… THE SUBJECTS! I recommend keeping things simple, but please don’t be afraid to add a pattern here or there. I have seen couples make multiple patterns work, but only because they complimented each other, were subtle, and they broke up the patterns by wearing solid color items of clothing like cardigans and scarves. Check out this perfect example by photographer Shannen Norman...

It’s important to know that there are no rules when it comes to what to wear for a photo session. The ideas above are merely suggested guidelines. Don’t be afraid to get creative!
